  Sportsmen’s Heritage Act Clears Key Hurdle Sportsmen Need to Call Their Congressmen Now  

The newly introduced House Resolution 4089—strongly supported by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) – has cleared the U.S. House of Representatives’ Natural Resources Committee and awaits a vote before the full House.  The bill passed the committee by a vote of 27 to 16.  

HR 4089, which is a package of four high-priority bills will:

Classify BLM and US Forest Service land as open to hunting, fishing and recreational shooting unless closed or restricted based on scientific evidence;    
Confirm that the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot ban lead in traditional ammunition or in sport fishing gear;
Protect recreational shooting on BLM National Monument land; and
Allow the import of legally hunted polar bear trophies now tangled in federal red-tape.
 “USSA is pleased that the House Natural Resources Committee took such prompt action to approve H.R. 4089 -- the most important pro-hunting legislation since the 1997 Refuge Improvement Act,” said Bill Horn, USSA Director of Federal Affairs (and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior).  “We tip our hats to the 24 Republicans and three Democrats who supported the bill.”

As long as democrats control the Senate and White House, it's hardly worth the effort to make this post. Nothing is going to happen, past the US House of Rep's.
If, after November, we get a republican President, House and Senate, then we can hope for good things as faras hunting "rights/priviledges". But until that day, we can't expect much.
Get out and vote in Novemember.

Hey Mojostick:

This particular legislation, The Sportmen's Heritage Act, was in fact initiated in the U.S. House by both Republican and Democratic sponsors. It seems to have general support,and little opposition. Who will be lined up to stop it?

It's a good idea not to make sweeping assumptions about what political party does or does not support conservation legislation, because both have a good record in this regard, and conservation is mostly a non-partisan issue. Let's don't make it one.

After the Keystone oil pipeline got canned, I have little faith anything related to common sense is going to get signed by the current administration.
I hope it works. My fear is once the base of special interests apply great pressure to stop anything related to hunting, that this thing may fizzle.
I'm not trying to cause a stir, just expressing my doubt.

Hey, I agree with  that - nothing about the Keystone pipeline seems to have been based on common sense, especially the pipeline proposal itself.

I am doubtfull also, but we'll just have to keep demanding that decisionmakers do the right thing for our environment and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Apathy will be the end of hunting, for sure. It's not true that this legislation doesn't have a chance. There are a great many Democrats who support hunting issues. But it certainly will fail if you throw your hands up and give up without even the effort to send an email to your Representative. I suggest Mojo, that you have more power in Congress than you know. But if you don't try, you certainly won't have any positive effect on the outcome.
