sneaky whitetails!!!
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:47:00 AM »
where are they at,all i'm seeing are yearlings here in southern ohio.i don't have the heart or desire to shoot a yearling.seems i jinxed myself by not filling the freezer early but i can't stand the thought of not being able to hunt late season.saw 6 deer this morning ( 3 button bucks,1 spike,2 yearling does )i'd prefer not to shoot a buck this late in the season unless he's just so big i couldn't pass on him,a big ,fat ,mature doe would fill the freezer nicely along with my sept.elk.anybody else having any luck?

After the rut those mature deer seem to get scarce.I hunted a couple days last week and had simliar results.I think the moon phase might have had them feeding at night to.I want one more for the freezer myself.Maby the later the winter gets the less food options they'll have and we can stab a couple.

Same where I hunt in Ind. but E.H.D. wiped out most of the mature deer in aug./sept. Didn't bother yearlings or fawns.Farmer found 11 bucks picking corn-5 which were huge!! Nothihg to have 3-4 fawns come by in oct. with no does--maybe you had the same trouble.Had to move 10 miles to find huntable herds.

I had five close Saturday (and a raccoon and a fox etc.) but the closest of the deer wasn't *quite* close enough.  Oh, and her vitals were covered by the no trespassing side on the property next to the one we were hunting.  :-p

They know.   They know.

Well I'm lucky enough to be on a bach group of deer, with 3 mature bucks in the group. Had a forky about step on me Saturday as I was drawing on the largest whitetail of my life. He and I both crapped ourselves and the giant got away with a "prematurly launched" arrow two feet to his right. I've got a south wind coming Wednesday (next to last day of the season). Anybody want to guess if I'll be working that afternoon and where I'll be? Don't worry the boss (wife and business partner) cleared the sick day already! There are still good bucks to be had. Find isolated pockets of food and the bucks will be there. To me it's just like October, just 75 degrees cooler with deer that act like they've be doing amphetamines.

In ohio at this time of year,I used to hunt by osage orange trees. They came to feed on the fruit about every day. How many deer can you get per season in ohio now?

with the reduced anterless tags you can take up to 7 deer, one buck.you have to use the reduced anterless prior to the gun season, you can buy these separete after you purchase your regular tag.i work 2nd shift and the only thing i'm seeing in the early mornings are yearlings, like wapiti said, there is a bachelor group here on the farm but its hard to get the wind right to be where i need to be.

before i get ahead of myself, dirty bill,i live in southern ohio and you can purchase up to 3 reduced price tags for 15.00ea but only after you buy a regular tag,now i'm not sure about the guidelines for non-residents without checking the hunting laws.i personally did not find any dead deer in my areas but jackson, highland, vinton, and ross co.'s reported a loss from this gnat,we live at a higher elevation and there don't seem to be as much standing water if that has anything to do with it.
