Arrow Setup-Weight and FOC?
« on: January 09, 2008, 07:09:00 PM »
I just joined the site and this is my first topic.
I have already learned alot.

After looking at Dr A's studies on arrows and broadheads reguarding penetration, I was wondering how you guys are setting up your arrows.

It looks like 650gr+ with an extreme forward FOC is the way to go.

What combination of components are you using to achieve this.

What carbon arrows, inserts and adapters, any internal weighting, broadhead, etc. to derive desired results for weight and FOC.
What is your final weight and FOC?

It would help having some actual setups to study.
Although I know everyone's is a bit different, I think it would be a great help.

Also what bow,  draw weight and velocity are you shooting?

I am shooting a 60",52lb@28" Palmer Recurve.

I am going to elk hunt this fall and want to build arrows to give me the best performance.

Thanks!

Since nobody's responded, I'll just say that I use aluminum arrows with 125 gn head. I'm sure a lot of guys that shoot wood don't use that formula either. But for carbons you'll have to get an overspined arrow with 100gn brass insert and heavey broadhead. Hopefully someone will have a more specific answer.

I'm shooting a Martin Hunter, 54@29".  I use a FF string.  My arrows are GT 5575 Expedition Hunters.  They are 30" from nock throat to insert.  I use 250 grain points.  Total arrow weight is about 540 grains and the FOC is 21%.  I get the 250 gr. fps from 3 Rivers.  My broadheads are either 125 Magnus II 2-blade, Wensel Woodsman, or 125 gr Snuffers with a 125 grain steel adapter.  I have no clue as to the velocity.  Yes, they bareshaft a little stiff, but fletched they fly like darts.  I hope this helps.

I shoot 2 Assenheimers one at 54#@28 and the other at 56#@28.  I shoot Carbon Express Hertiage 250's at 31", 100 grain brass insert, 145 grain Woodsman and the 3 Rivers 5gr per inch weight tubes cut to about 22" give or take.  Each arrowed was weighted on a grain scale and the weight tube trimmed till the arrows came out exactly at 750grains. I'm not sure of the % of FOC, haven't factored that yet but I want to. After reading the Ashby report I will probably swtich to the 160 gr El grande grizzly on a 75gr steel adapterand 50 grain brass insert with little to no weight tube.  Should put me in the 750 range.

Rockz, do not get hung up on specific weights, find what shoots best for you. I shoot carbon express heritage 150 cut to 29.5"s and 175-200 grains up front to acheive great flight and my arrows weigh 500-525 grains, I shoot these from 52-55# bows and I would hunt anything in NA with my set-ups, perfect arrow flight and a sharp BH do wonders. This same arrow set-up would work very well for you out of your Palmer and be more than enough for Elk hunting, flat trajectory and plenty of thump. Shawn

Rockz,

The arrow setup I've been shooting for the past several years starts with a full length Beman ICS 340 shaft. I have a 32" draw, so a full length shaft is a must. From there I use a standard Uni nock, four 4" feathers, a Flightmate adapter (20 grains?) and a 125-grain Ace Standard 2-blade broadhead. My finished arrows end up in the 500- to 520-grain range. The normal velocity for my bows with those arrows is between 194 and 200 fps. I checked FOC just for kicks a week or so ago and found they're right around 13% -- normal range.

I've put those arrows through (not in, through) animals ranging from small game to whitetail deer, a 200# boar hog, elk and bull moose.

Bowfishing notwithstanding, I don't see any reason for me to incease my arrow weight unless I go up significantly in poundage or hunt something tougher to penetrate than a bull moose. And I don't predict either of those situations anywhere in my near future.

how do you get the % of FOC

length mark half way of arrow
find the balance spot
difference in " then divide that by the length = FOC

does that sound right?

Beman MFX 400 full length shaft, 100gn brass insert, 75gn broadhead adapter, 125gn broadhead. With feathers, nock & wrap that gives me a total weight of 664gn and 21% FOC. Coming out of a 62#@30" Horne longbow, I'm getting 180+ FPS.

ok, it's 30" arrow / 15" half way mark / balance point from the tip *3"* / 3" divided by 30" = 10%

I finally got some arrows to bareshaft test.

I had best results with GT55/75 @29.5" with 200gr field points.I thought they might be a little stiff since I am only shooting 52lbs.But  they shot like lasers. The 175 gr fp's also flew well. I tried 250 grain heads and they flew  very well, just a slight bit weak all the way down to 28.5"

I even shot a 175gr broadhead bare shaft and it shot straight.

I also put a 3gr/inch weight tube in and tested it with great results, close to 600gr total and still with  good forward FOC.

I tried GT 35/55 and they shot well with 125 gr FP's @28.75".
