average arrow weight?? and trouble!!
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:52:00 PM »
just wondering what your arrows weigh...and what you hunt with them? i'm starting to doubt my arrows. shot 2 hogs today. the first hog(140lbS or so) i thought was a great angling away shot at 8yds..but no blood trail.nothing. second hog(75lbs) was around 15yds. arrow blew straight through. same angle as the first hog. hog ran about 30yds and fell dead.....but every hog above 100lbs that i've shot, i never find or its a 300yd trailing job.so my bow is 53# with 7.75" brace height. my arrows are 2018s, 30.5",100gr steel force premiers-total weight is 510grs.so what gives!? any advice?
thanks in advance

I would suggest working on an arrow set up that works out to 650 gr. with a 53# bow, maybe a 2020 and more weight up front  like 175gr. with your arrow length.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Even though quartering away is a good shot I would try and wait for a broadside shot or as close to one as you can get. I have taken some broadside shots that did not get complete penetration and the blood trail was sparse and long. Remember your bigger hogs tend to have larger and thicker bones, and muscle. That sheild everyone talks about is usually about an 1/2" thicker with mud as well. The bigger the hog the closer I try to get.

Since having shoulder surgery I moved down to a 45#@26" bow with a 525 grain arrow and have killed more than 35 hogs with it. As Jeffery said I would put more up front. I am shooting 225 up front on an AD trad light. If you decide to get new shafts you may want to look at carbon as well.

Not trying to insult your inteligence but maybe your broadheads aren't sharp enough.

Tuning or shot placement - that setup should be working just fine.

Hey rember, hogs very seldom leave a good blood trail, all the HAIR, mud and dirt tend to not let much reach the ground!! ALWAYS,ALWAYS shoot the heavies arroow setup that will fly perfect, and keep your  broadhead SHARP!!! I a traditional guy, can't get carbon or alu to fly at all. Your setup is find, I shoot 51@26"  Good luck!

thanks for the advice guys. i do keep my broadheads razor sharp.....im always trying to keep them touched up just from taking them in and out of my quiver(dont know if the quiver dulls them a bit,but makes me feel better.). so putting any weight up front will weaken my spine. does that include inserts? i thought about getting some heavier inserts.

thanks again guys

Any weight you add up front will weaken spine.

I agree. The first thing I'd do is strip some feathers and bareshaft tune.

Are you using cut on impact broadheads?  That's the same weight bow I use and I'm shooting 450 grs.  No problem with 200+ pound whitetails.  All double lunged.
I'm not putting up with this guys shit and dogging me.

i just got back from bareshafting/ paper tuning. my arrows fly perfect. bit i did try 2117's,2020's,and even 2213's, which all shot horrible at different lengths and point weights....the guy at the archery shop said alot of trad guys that he had coming in are adding rope into their aluminium arrows! so how could i go about this. any suggestions??
