Let's FORGE a head....
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:01:00 PM »
Okay, I am a complete beginner to this blade stuff.  Just went through an awesome build along on another site on how to make a knife out of files.  The guy doing the build along builds a fire with osage logs and makes kinda an oven outa the logs.

It may be frowned upon in the Kansas City suburbs if'n I built a big fire in the back yard.  So I'm going through Wally world picking up some groceries this evening and see a 30" square barbie q for 20 bucks.  I get to thinking that may be the answer.

What are ya'll using to get the steel hot enough to anneal?  I am not asking you professionals out there who can afford to spend the bucks on a fancy gas forge.  I'm asking you do-it-your-selfer guys who figure out a way to do it.

Hopin to make my first pass at it this weekend.

Get yourself a kiln brick. drill it out and add a propane torch. Been useing one of them since Jeremy sent them to me and told me how to make it work. Slick as a frogs bellie in a rain storm. I'll see if i can find a pic.<><

I tried looking for the build along.  No luck!

Sorry, been out of touch for the last day or so, working my sorry *** off.  Day 10 of 23 straight and counting!

PM me your address and I'll send a brick or two your way.  They work great for annealing and heat treating a blade, but are a little slow for general forging work unless you upgrade to a bigger torch - or just do two or three blades at once  :)
