Big Skinner Knife
« on: February 01, 2008, 07:22:00 AM »
This is a big skinner that I made. The blade is once again from Helle. The antler had too much of a curve so I cut it, reangled the back part and added a spacer. I tried some file work on the back which turned out alright for my first attempt. The sheath is handmade by myself. The blade is 5" long.

Very nice!

What size leather did you use?6-7oz?Larger,smaller?I really like the sheath. What color dye is that?

Nice file work too.

The leather is 8-9 oz I think. The finish is natural with about 6 coats of neatsfoot oil, heating with a hair dryer to help it absorb the oil and then finished with 3 or 4 coats of mink oil using the same heating process.

Thanks.

I have some 8-9oz that looked too thick to make a sheath to me,but have heard from others that that's what they use.

I wouldn't go any thinner than 6oz. I use a thin piece(3-4oz) to cut sheath welts out of.

I think the file work turned out very nice for your first attempt. Once again I like your style of sheathes.
I reckon so
