Tools for making Sheath
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:41:00 PM »
I've been wanting to make a few sheaths for some knives and I was wondering if there were any "kits" that contain the basic tools needed or if I would need to buy them seperately.

I would appreciate suggestions on what basic tools would be needed.

Thanks!

I use a razor blade to cut them out and a nail in my cordless drill for punching holes to sew it up. You will also need something to mark a line on the leather where you want to punch the holes. A belt sander is handy for evening things up once the sheath is sewn up or you can do it with just some sandpaper. If you want to decorate it you will need leather punches and a wooden mallet. Really there isn't to much you need to make a plain sheath.

I bought the needles, waxed thread, and hole punches from Tandy. The punches have four prongs and make it easier to keep the lines uniform. I also bought a gouge that can do a specific measurement. I later bought a beginning tool set that lets you decorate the leather. I use a utility knife to cut it. You can do a google search and will find lots of tutorials about how to do it and what you will need or not need.

Go to leatherworker.net, you will find more information then you'll know what to do with.  It's a great site and the people there are very helpful!
