what leather to use
« on: March 15, 2008, 01:32:00 PM »
I was just wanting to know what weight leather to use in sheath making?  I got some but it seems to thick compared to other sheaths that I have.

I think mine is usually 10-12 ounce but I have seen them made with lighter weight leather than that.

I use 1/8" for mine (not sure what weight that equates to!)

1/8" is 8ounce.  Leather is measured in ounces and 1 ounce is 1/64"  so 8 ounce is 8/64" or 1/8".
I think, my opinion, between 7-9 is good for sheaths.

thanks for the info, the first sheath I made was out of 8 ounce and it seeme to heavy for my knifes and just did not look good, but that could be the builder.  I guess that leather work is a whole nother skill and I guess I need work on it.
