DIY Helle built knives...lets see 'em!
« on: May 01, 2008, 06:55:00 AM »
Hi all,

I'm thinking about putting together a Helle knives from there starter kits. So if you've done one show us all a look see please.

I'm not real sure on how to go about it... kinda thinking about a stag type handle slid onto the end.

Many thanks,    :help:

Here's a couple I made recently:
cocobolo handle, harding blade, homemade sheath

Ebony-bocote-ebony handle, viking blade:

I've made a couple others as well, no pics.  These knives are tons of fun to make and use Al!  I highly recommend them.  Unless there is a model that you can't get as a blade (like the fire) or a model that you would build the same as the prebuilt model, I'd get a blade and make one.  Very easy, rewarding and fun.  Cheap too!
Good luck.

I encourage you to make one. You can make them as simple or fancy as you want. You are only limited by your inagination. Here are some I've made. The antler handle was the easiest. Basically, just find an antler that fits your hand, drill a hole and glue the blade in.

Gee mate there good lookers all right. I'm not really a knife maker nor do I have the tools but I like the simple blades as well as the cost to it. My boy went and lost his knife... somewhere...so I was looking at putting something together more personal, like what youve done.

What are the model names?

Thanks,

al

Here's 3 I've done...

First is a polar blade with the little forkhorn antler from my son's first buck. The finger guard is buffalo horn. Made him a really neat Christmas present.

The next one is one I made for my Dad.  Burl walnut and antler  handle, with brass finger guard.

The last one is one I made for the St. Jude's community bow that was auctioned off a couple of years ago.  Osage and purpleheart handle, brass finger guard, and a small novaculite bird point inlay.

Not Finished (no its Norwegian...) All shaping done by hand, rasp, file sandpaper... It has a way to go, but for my first knife... I am having fun... If I can do, anyone can... ANd in comparison to what i could have bought for this price, this is a much better blade... The blade is awesome!!! WISH  I WOULDA DONE IT SOONER!!!

I'm a little late finding this thread but I'm thinking about making a couple of more Helle's, one for my daughter and one for my land owner.  Here's the first I made - has several critters under it's belt in two years!  Steve
