Kevin,
Nice knives. Love that maple burle wood.
Question for ya. How come the finger guards are so far back from the back of the blade?  Just curious.
I reckon so

OK,  LOL   I learned something new already.
I don't mean to sound ignorant but I know next to nothing about blade forging except for what I've learned reading threads on here. I'll be interested to read the responses. Thanks Kevin.

I think the ricasso length is sometimes determined by the guard length. The longer the guard comes down in front of the index finger, the more forward the choil can be away from the guard. This will make sharpening with a stone easier.
I dont think either one of these knives have a particularly long ricasso. They look pretty good to me. These knives are patterned after what is sometimes called the ABS look. The ABS teaches that the width to height ratio of the ricaso should be about 1 to 1.41. The 1 being from guard to plunge.
   Just my opinion. Lin

They both look good to me!
I really like the simpler damascus too.  The real tight 300+ layer comlicated pattern steel is a marvel to see, but I don't really like it in a knife  :)   What you have there is gorgeous!
