Natural Sharpening Stones
« on: July 28, 2008, 02:52:00 PM »
Maybe not exactly bowhunting, but I'm wondering if anybody uses stones they find while in the woods for sharpening, and advice on how to pick em and what to look for.

in a pinch on a camping trip i use a VERY FINE sand stone sort of rock i picked up in the water to sharpen my knife. Worked OK but i would rather have my arkansas stones.

I'd rather just strop on my leather belt, if I really need to. Luckily my pack contains a HUGE arsenal of sharpening gear! (And at least 2 spare knives!)

Not me, I would rather use a stone I know is flat and hard.

No. I spend too much time getting a good edge on a knife to take a chance that a natural stone would be flat enough or the right grain-size to sharpen, not destroy, what I've worked so hard to achieve in a blade.
