I have a hoe/ice scraper blade I'd like to use for a blade.  Any opinions as to its' type or suitability?  Thanks, Mark

There's no way to know unless you can do a spark test. It needs to be high carbon steel to be suitable. Lin

Mark,

My first knife was made from an old (really old) flat shovel. I had used a strip of it previously for a underhammer rifle mainspring. Since I knew it had a fairly high carbon content, I made a knife from it. It holds an edge very well. I annealed it and re heat treated it.

I say give it a try unless you can find a saw blade.
