« on: January 14, 2009, 11:12:00 PM »
I have been working with a 1x42 belt grinder so I have been praying for a 2 x 72 belt sander     I guess the Lord would just have to put one in my hands because times is hard right now money is short, Well He answers prayers in time HE answers. A friend of mine came by and was looking at my work and I said something about if I only had the big boy toy 2x72! He told me  some friend of his they did some tradin a few years back and he had one in the barn not being used!!!     I thought Calf Rope your kidding    "[dntthnk]"  He said get in the Truck    My friend and I did a little horse tradin our selfs   :D    look at what I brought home yea baby! It came from Bell Helicopter they had it in there shop I guess but she is all mine now    :p

Cogratulations! It looks in good shape. Just check all of the bearings by spinning them with your hands. The real test will be when you start it up and run it a little. If anything needs replacing, it'll be an easy fix and your on your way. What is the "brand" on it? Lin

That sounds like a great trade to me!  Like Lin said, check the bearings.  Other than that, I really like a ceramic platen on mine, or glass.  You can just glue it to the existing one with JB Weld, if you decide to go that route.

I will post some more pictures and will need some help big time on what I need to order or change with it Thanks Lin every thing checked out awesome but when you plug it in the power box has a humming sound? have not looked inside to see is that normal?

HI
I'M NEW TO THE KNIFE MAKING, I HAVE A 1X30 SANDER AND WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH YOU 1X42 SANDER, THEN I TRY TO GRIND THE SIDE OF THE BLADE IT STARTS TO VIBARATE AND WILL NOT LEAVE THE BLADE SMOOTH, IF I GO UP ABOVE THE PLATE IT THEN ROUNDS THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM
ANY THOUGHTS
THANKS

I dont know what that humming is. Does it sound like it's OK? Or is a bad sound, if you know what I mean? Lights dimming, smell smoke, kind of sound? Lin

I am relatively new also but I will tell you everything makes a difference when you start grinding the angle of you platen ,the height ,and even the way you stand, relax, and it should grind top and bottom on a slack belt, relax and keep trying!!    ;)

Practice  ;)  (Its not easy but you will get it)

Go through about 5 or 6 belt grits and wind up around 600 grit or 800 grit, buffing (IMO)really won't matter
