Cracks in Limbs.
« on: January 24, 2008, 11:04:00 AM »
I have an older 40# Shakespeare recurve. While fixing the rest last night, I noticed two cracks in the fiberglass on the belly of the limbs, right where they meet the riser. There is one crack in each limb. They are about four inches long and run parallel to the limbs. Is the bow stil usable? Is it possible to repair this?
This way of life is a trap.....and I'm plotting my escape.

If the fiberglass is not pulling away from the limbs , then it is probably safe to shoot. If you are worried you can take some 1/16" bo-tuff or wood laminate and epoxy over that length of limb with 5 minute epoxy, sand at a bevel on the ends to blend in smoothly with the rest of the limb and you have just customized your bow. Since this is on this part of the limb, it should not change anything on the performance. Make sure you sand the limb where the overlay will be added. When you get it good and smooth to suit you, get you some spray on finish that will blend with the rest of the bow and you are done. Or you can lightly sand the entire bow and spray it all.

I would recomend that you use the thin Super Glue on the cracks and be overly generous using .

Then if you want you can do as the post above suggest but it should not be neccessary thou.

Then purchase some Deft spray Varnish to finish the face of the limbs....ONE SHOT...  :D    :D    :)
