"First Blood"
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:49:00 AM »
FINALLY finished it up. Took about 3-4 days total, which is unusual for me.  I am planning on brass bolsters when I pick up my order tomorrow, thats why theres a bit of space left up front.

I made a mistake when cutting my tang, and cut it TOO SMALL. I have large hands, and it is just barely large enough for comfort. Blade is by far my best yet, freehand grinding takes a WHILE to get everything symmetrical.

This blade has special meaning as its the first to get me, really really good. Watch out where yer hands are when sanding a blade folks! That explains the name of the knife, and the title of this thread.

Walnut and osage orange laminant scales I glued up, 7/32" copper pins, an old Nicholson file was ressurected for the blade, it was edge quenched, and polished to 1000 grit, as were the scales. I am not too terribly happy with the scales, so they may come off and be replaced...

Anywho, to get to the point, I did have a good time, and I am pleased so thats all that matters. I plan on making a larger crossdraw sheath for this one to carry around and show folks who are interested in my blades, and who knows, I might cut something every now and then.. It has a remarkable edge on it, and I can vouch for it being sharp.

Little filework..

Hope yall enjoyed looking as much as I did making it.

Very nice piece!  The grind lines look great.  What type of grinder are you using?

All roughed out with a 4 1/2" side grinder, then honed with my 6"x48" belt sander.
