Karl, How am I doing? (Update)

Been kicking the idea of building a take down in my mind for a while, and eyeing your work has sent me over the edge.

I am not positive I will make it a take down, I may peen the pin over a brass bolster, BUT thats besides the point. Only a slight change between the two.

I was planning on cutting the slot into the end of the tang, and welding a threaded rod onto the end, for the tang nut to screw onto and bring the blade/handle/guard together.

Is there any flaw in my idea? Comment would be much appreciated, and I hope you dont mind me "borrowing" your system.

Here's my prototype, after a few hours of drawing out blueprints, and even more working on it with a file. I still need to even up my riccaso/tang area a bit more.

Should I taper the tang more? Or leave it as is?

I think your idea sounds great.
Steel is pretty tough, so you can minimize your tang considerably and have no fears.
Take-down knives are certainly NOT my idea.
There are deffinitely a couple things that I have "invented" in the five years I've been doing them, but I was taught by a fellow who has been doing them for 20 years.
I have an early 1950s Swiss bayonet that is a take-down, with threaded tang and all, just like mine.
I think they did it for manufacturing purposes.
If you weld on a threaded stub, just keep in mind that it needs to me narrower than your ricasso area where you slot your guard.
I'm sure you've figured that out by now.

Well, I have my guard filed and fitted, my pin welded, and the blade as cleaned up as I am going to get it before re-tempering.

I decided on a hidden tang with a peened over pin holding it together.

Heres where I am at now...

You're making a lot of progress.  I think you're about to mess around and get the hang of this stuff.

Oh, and just to clarify the terms.  I think what you're talking about doing is know as a through tang.  If the tang passes trough the handle and is attached to a hilt, butt plate or pommel by peening, bolting or pinning...it's technically a through tang.  Hidden tangs don't come out of the handle.  

What your doing is actually something that sword makers have been doing for a looooong time.  So it will be good and strong for sure in a knife.
