Lin ? HR 1095 \\ CRA 1095 or 1080 HELP
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:31:00 PM »
I have been have great success with my old sawmill blades. Now I am wanting to move on to something that doesn't take so much prep time removing rust.

My question at Admiral steel there is a HR 1095 and there is a CRA 1095 The CRA is a cold rolled would that be easer on belts and  to work and all ready annealed? The HR 1095 would be hard and need more prep to work?

As for heat treatment both would work just like the L6 I have already gotten used to working with?
Or would I be better with the 1075/1080?
Thank you so much for any help.

Well I ain't Lin but I will try to help you.  If I am right Lin is pretty busy right now working on a knife for judging in May at the blade show.
My experience is it's hard to go wrong with 1080/1084/1075,  these steels are very easy to get good results with.
you would think that 1095 would be right in there with theses steels also,  but it's not!  It requires a very fast quench time because of maganese.  I personally won't work with it.  I would strongly suggest good old 1080/1075 you won't be disappointed.

Not sure on heat treat on L6 so I won;t compare the 2.  If you forge it won't matter if you use annealed or hot rolled.  If stock removing go with annealed.  I hope this helps you if not just pm me. Talk to you later

TxMoon,
I agree with Brad. You cant go wrong with the 1080 's and 1070's.
Yes, I have been preoccupied. We'll see how it goes. Thanks, Lin
