5160 steel

quick question
can any one tell me where to buy 5160 steel that is not 1/4 inch thick, i've looked at jantz's and texas knifes and all that have is 1/4 thick. i really don't want to grind that much down, and i don't have a forge built so beating it is out of the question for now.

All I've found is the 1/4" stuff (and I have a bunch of it waiting for me to fire up the forge).

Someone with a power hammer could reduce a bar down for you in one or two passes...

thanks, how hot do i haft to get it in order to beat it down with a hammer?  i have a anvel but no press and i don't know anyone around dallas who would

Dana, A forge is probably the easiest "major" tool you can build. For forging, you just need to get 1600-1700 degrees F. If you can do that, you can hammer the 1/4 inch into shape easily. Lin

i have one that i've build but it's not got the right burner, i'd try to make one (venturi burner) but i've done something wrong, it's got to much orange flame, my mig tip may be to big, it's a .45 i may need a .25 in order to work right, how can i tell when i get to 1600-1700 degrees? maybe by color?

Dana you might go to Don Fogg sight and he tells how to make a small one thats real easy.and cheap

I can help you along if you like
   
A local welding shop can do it for you if you don't want to mess with it

Wayne Goddards Book 50$ knife shop shos how to make a forge from and insulative fire brick and a propane torch, They work great.

Dana I live in Hillsboro just south of you bring it over. I have some 1080 and all the tools you would need to do it... I been wanting someone to hammer a knife with just to bounce ideas off of... give me a ring I am off work except for Thursdays any time you want me and my shop is open..
