For those of you who know him personally or by reputation, I have some sad news about Alfred Pendray.
His shop burned to the ground this weekend. It is a total loss.
Al was in the woods hunting when he got the news.  It is undetermined how it started. His shop was connected to a walk in cooler and meat room where game was processed.
It is as yet unknown if the fire started in the meat room or in the shop itself.
All of his equipment and tools are destroyed.
I met Alfred nearly 30 years ago and was his apprentice as a horse shoer, I still work for his family shoeing race horses. Alfred also took me under his wing and "tried" to teach me to make knives. I have made a few but don't have the talent or patience to do it full time, so I never post on this forum. ( although I do read often)
Alfred in also a traditional bow hunter, he has taken everything from squirrel to elk, deer, bear etc..etc.. with a recurve and a Hill longbow.
I'm sure he can use your prayers and best wishes.

I am sorry to hear about Al's shop.
I've visited with him briefly at Knifemakers Guild shows in the past. Hope he has some kind of insurance...

Dang, that is horrible.  Thoughts and prayers are with him,  and be sure to let us know if there is anything we can do to help out.

Everybody in knives knows the name Al Pendray. That's too bad. I know it would be a tramatic experience. Let us know if there is going to be a benifit or something. Lin

Thanks for the kind thoughts folks, I'll be sure to pass them on, I should see Al in a day or so and I'll find out if he had insurance.
I know he lost a lot of equipment, power hammers, belt grinders, computers, forges, Wootz crucibles, hand tools, cnc machine, lathes, surface grinders,... everything.
I feel like I've been punched in the stomach, I can't imagine how he feels.

Hate to hear that.  I got to talk to him and Charles Ochs at a hammer-in at Old Washington several years back and was really impressed with both of them.  Got me interested in using 52100 and austempring with low temp salts for bainite.  Mr. Pendray is one of the smartest men I ever met and really good at explaining things to the rest of us.
Hope he is able to replace everything.

Sorry to hear that. Mr. Pendray is a true gentleman, long time traditional archer, and legendary knifemaker.
