Found a source for quenching oil
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:54:00 PM »
Hi guys,
Thanks to my friendly neighborhood Master Bladesmith for telling me of a local source for quenching oil!

John King
King Oil Company
12314 Huyett Lane
Hagerstown, MD 21740

301-797-0982   or    1-800-552-7432

Mr. King and his staff were very informative and professional.  Mr. King is a Chemist and has experience in metalurgy, he offers many types of quenching oil (Med, med. fast and fast oil) probably more, that he formulates at his small facility.  I ordered the Medium fast oil, "Metal King Quench Oil "C"

I'm sure it will work better than Veggie oil I have been using, and after shopping around for other commercial grade quenchants, the price for a 5 gal. bucket is very good. Mr. king ships UPS.  I spoke to Mr. King this morning at his office and told him what I needed, and received a call around 4 pm that my oil was ready for pick up!  With tax  $44.47

I do not receive any compensation or discounts, just passing on a source.

Steve

Great Steve! Thanks for passing on the info.  Let us see the results with this oil after you get it.

I'm curious if anybody has results for this stuff? I contacted the company and got some information. One thing that worried me was that he recommended the same oil "C" for "knifemakers" regardless of the steel. He said he had not done any hardness testing with the oils. He was very nice and helpful and the product is very affordable.

DoubleLung, I did an "edge quench" with my Metal King "C" quench oil on a little "Caper" today and the file test went well!  I will know for sure when I finish the knife and try a performance test!

doublelung, i had the same question and mr. king gave me the same answer...what persuaded me to get the c was he said it had more "preservatives" that dont let it breakdown as quickly with repeated uses..the a and b have less still better than hyraulic/drty oil.

Ive got two differant oils from him and have mixed results. Cant say yet if its the oil or me. Ive only used it maybe 6 times and have used several kinds of steel. I have a 12 second and a 24 second oil.

Mater, I got the Medium fast oil and I have quenched file steel and 1075, so far so good!  I spoke to the vender a few weeks ago and they will create oil to your specs.
