My swap knife is DONE with Pics pg 2
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:53:00 PM »
This knife is the first one ive hammered out, the first one ive put pins in and the first one ive done any type of file work on.  It will be wearing the bluejean micarta i made with two copper tubes as pins/tung holes. Ive still got alot of sanding and filing to go before heat treat but i just wanted to get yalls opinions.  The file work looks alot better than the pic does it justice but it isnt perfect but not bad for the first try i dont think. So have at it and let me know what yall think.

Beaver #1 the file work is just on the top where you can see it in the pic. I'm worried my newbie skills will disapoint someone who might get it with a lot of knife making experience, i just want them to be happy with it.  I hope that makes sense.  It already is much better than my first knife but still a lifetime away from the pros on this board.

Funny canders, I too was worried about my newbie skills. Maybe we will get lucky and draw each other.

I'm looking at it as a way to remind "the pro's" how good their work is. If they get mine they can get a distant, starry look in their eye, and with a catch in their voice, say quietly to no one in particular, "I remember when mine used to look like that.".    :bigsmyl:    Well that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's amazing!  I have a blade cut out and ready for heat treating for the swap that has almost the same shape as that one.  Even some file work.  Great minds think alike?  LOL..........  It looks really good.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to get mine done in time but I'm working on it.

Razorback that is a good way to look at things maybe they will look at it and look back on their early beginnings.

I'm glad guys are getting some shop time on the knives!  I'm starting to get a few emails from guys who have finished them.

In the first swap I organized I received a "cheatr" knife.  The profile was cut from an Old Hickory butcher knife and osage scales were added.  I still use it  :)

It's been suggested that I set this up with "beginner" and "advanced" groups and though the thought is tempting, I look back on that first knife and wouldn't swap it for one of Lin's LOL!  We typically get a lot of first timers in the swap and when they send their knife to one of the "pro's" (yes, it has happened) it may be a little nerve wracking, but they can expect an honest critique and advise for improvement.

Hands on critique would be great because I see improvements but have no hands on experience to continue to get better so if a pro gets mine I hope they can give me some tips on technique.

I just posted one that I finally got done for the swap. I've got to make a sheath for it yet but one down and hopefully a couple more to go.

Jeremy, I'll be e-mailing you in a few days with what I plan on having done.
I reckon so

Thanks for the compliments guys and prairieboy I'm glad you like my quote I came up with that after going through some tough times and realizing I would rather build something myself than buy it if at all possible because nothing feels better than taking some scraps of something and making a useful tool.  I take pride in the fact that I haven't become a person who is so spoiled to having things done for him that he no longer can do things for himself.

Thanks John I appreciate that I hope whoever gets it finds it to be a useful tool and gets to bloody it up one day

Here she is all finished up with sheath.  I finished the handle with a super glue finish. I also tried my hand at a buck print on the sheath. It is far from perfect but Ive learned a lot and its sharp enough to pop hair.  I hope whoever gets her finds it useful. Let me know what yall think.

Sweet looking blade. I am working on several rasp knifes myself.  I like the micarta handle and the blade shape.
