Gift to a Father (Knife Pic) SUCCESS!!!
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:43:00 AM »
So the old adage what do you get a man who could buy whatever he needs and wants is an issue that I come across with my father.  Gifts that mean much to my father are often just time spent together not a big purchase a fleece hunting sweater.  Because I'm a tinker and from the information and tools on this site I decided to make my father something for this deer season.  I leave today to go up and bow hunt with my dad with a finished knife in hand.  A small token of a son's love shown in a total monetary cost of a $2 file from a pawn shop, scrap lumber from recent bow making, and ultimately a labor of love.  I got the spine work idea from a local Fort Smith man who I haven't even met but I saw his work.  I figured that my dad would stick a deer and when it comes time to field dress I would hand him the knife.  He doesn't even know that I have been tinkering with knives.  Now only if my dad can come through and stick one my plan would be complete.  The knife was made from an old Nicholson rasp and I left some of the file grooves.  Didn't polish the blade out because I wanted it to have a "worked" look. Blade 2 3/4" and handle 3"

I like it, and your Dad will Love it. Very nice, and that file work is especially cool. I hope your Dad gets a deer so you can surprise him that way, but however you give it to him he will cherish it. I know I would. Hunt safe, and best of Luck to you both!

very nice. i have been working on a knife for my ol man for a while now , but the wife hates the sound of the file , so its on the backburner. you just inspired me to go to storage and get it back out and work it up.

excellent knife , just make sure you keep that heel transition smooth. a+

So I went up to hunt Missouri this past week and sure enough the first night a large doe walked past my dad at about 20 yards.  One shot and she ran about 50 yards and keeled over.  Sure my dad shoots a bow with "training wheels" but he is a traditionalist at heart (used to shoot a recurve) but his shoulders won't hold up.  This is his first deer kill with a bow.  When he cleaned the deer with his new knife he mentioned more than once that it was one of the greatest experiences to be able to do this with his son.  My joy as a son to have him harvest an animal and give him a homemade knife to clean it is unexplainable!
