I shape the handles preety close before gluing but finish it after. I just go slow to keep it from getting too hot. I don't try to seal up oily woods like coco and rosewood. I just use a thin coat of Danish Oil. Sometimes if you wipe the wood down with acetone to get some of the oil out it takes a seal better.
