I know this isn't a hunter, but I thought some of you may be interested in seeing the san mai I've finally been able to weld utilizing pure nickel.  It was failing until I caught onto the fact that the wrought iron needed a higher welding temp... which seems obvious in retrospect since you need to forge it at higher temps.  I was also able to succeed in part by doing a 'dry weld' without flux by using my wire feed to draw a pretty tight bead around the billet.  I'm excited about this as it is setting the stage for me trying stainless/high carbon san mai. I love the look of the nickel.. but, from what I understand, it also has function as it inhibits carbon migration to the wrought... Although I've never gotten a good idea as to how much that happens anyway....

Scott your work is rediculous!   I say that in such a good way - I am so impressed!

That knife in a drop point would be just awesome for a hunter.

Nice! Did you weld the nickel on the edge of the blade before you ground on it?

Anthony... The whole billet was welded together. I had 5 layers of equal width and length... the two outside layers were wrought iron then nickel foil.. then the 1/8" core of 15n20.  The challenge was getting the nickel to stick to the wrought.
