what types of steel are good for stock reduction?

i build stock reduction knives and the first two were from a file. i have a friend that whats a knife bigger than what i can get out of a file so i have been looking at other metals to recycle and that will make a good working blade. i have looked at skill saw blades, lawnmower blades, leaf springs and really dont know anything about the steels that there made out of though. also i thought about buying some brand new bar stock for this knife to ensure that its good steel. WHAT KINDA STEEL SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT? the only site ive looked at is texasknife.com and they have some tool steel that is about the deminsions i need. and also with steel sugestions i would appriciate the heat treat process for that steel if known. thank you everybody.

I make my knives out of D2. It's rough on the belts but once finished the steel holds a great edge.

A usedd horse rasp will make a huge big knife and can be gotten used from a local farrier cheap. Look them up and ask what it would take to get their discards. Most high end rasps are 1090 or 1095 steel.
