Can anyone tell me what kind of leather to use for making sheaths?  And would the same kind be used for back quivers as well?  Thank you for any info.

8 or 10oz veggie tanned leather is what I use for sheaths... or thick rawhide covered in buckskin if I'm going for a Native look.

Though I don't usually use the veggie tanned hides for back quivers (unless there's giong to be some tooling) I'd use much thinner stuff if I did.  8-10oz veggie tanned leather would make for a very stiff backquiver.

Jeremy,

I like 7 or 8 oz veggie tanned leather for sheaths.  10 oz for larger blades.  I personally prefer the thin 4 oz leather in an pre-colored oiled material.  I particularly like a dark brown distressed look.  You want a back quiver to collapse in the middle to hold the arrows in place and keep them quiet.  Thicker leather tends to stay round or oval in shape so the arrows rattle around a lot.

How is your forge build coming along?  Email me your address, I still need to send you that  extra red kydex for scale liners and handle seperators.

I'll second both Jeremy and Lowell. thick for blade and a bit thinner for quivers.

I am looking for a really nice custom left handed back quiver, something more fitting of a european style vs. native american. I would like to have my family crest tooled into the leather.  Anybody have any recomendations?
