I'm new to knife making,been using files.DO any of yall buy you'r knife blades like 1095 or D2 STEEL from knife making suppliers.

charlie im new to the game as well, i to make file blades for know but its only a matter of time before i start forging them.  skull makes beautiful knives too.  my big passion is the idea that i can turn a file into a useful tool after its life of a file has ended.  i get a lot of insperation from frank he builds RESURECTED knives.  you should check his work out.  and welcome to the world of knife building YOU WILL BECOME AN ADDICT!!! lol.

I use a mix of purchased steel stock and used horse rasps and files from american companies.  You have to really watch who the steel suppliers are.  Lots of steel is made in China and is not consistant in metallurgy or characteristics from batch to batch.  If you can get American steel spend the money and buy it.  It will be consistant from batch to batch.    

Heller Horse Rasps, Nicholson files, and Simmonds files are all 1095.  They are made from quality American steel and respond to heat treatment uniformly.
