Made it to the shop today
« on: May 01, 2011, 09:15:00 PM »
Made it to the shop today to heat treat a couple blades and got into the groove of smashing hot steel while the 3 were in the temper oven.  Top blade was formerly a tooth off the road grader that keeps my road smooth(relatively smooth that is)  Not sure what the steel is but it hadened up nice.  The handle section is mild steel because it came out so nice from the power hamer that I did not want to loose any of the good steel so I just kept smashing part of the rebar I had it welded to and we will see how that works.  It is my first chefs knife and although not perfect I am really pleased with how it is turning out.  It is tapered to the tip and has a tapered tang.  This one will take rest in my sisters kitchen if it turns out worthy.  Better pics to follow as I get it finished up.  The next one down pointed left is a??? not sure but it is a big, heavy sucker and is my first attempt at a san mai with wrought and coil spring.  The two drop point hunters are just mono steel and just for friends.  Coil spring - pretty much my go to steel.  The pearing knife is pretty cool piece of coil as well and is beveled only on one side, Sashimi knife style and is for another friend in DC.  The little necker is another san mai with mild over mower - lawn mower blade that is.  I will give that to my nephew who is graduating from high school in a few weeks.  He is not a hunter or a knife person in any way but he respects my desire to chase deer and I made him a little recurvewhen he was just a child that hangs in his bedroom so the little knife will be enough to open mail or butter his toast in college.  He will appreciate the history and effort(I hope).  The chunks of steel are pieces of the pile of wrought I have access to and I am sending some of it to another bladesmith over on Paleo Planet.
