I picked up a piece of flat steel at Lowes, ground it out to suit my purpose but it seems pretty soft,,if I heat it in a fire and dump it in water quickly, will that harden it up? Its just a knife to have in the boat, nothing fancy. Thanks

The steel you get from lowes or homedepot, is all mild steel, it will not get hard, you can buy some knife steel fairly cheep most under 10.00
