Passed up shot
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:41:00 PM »
Went hog huntin' a couple of days ago and slipped into about 15 yards of a 200 pounder. Was waiting for it to turn broadside (it was facing me) when I noticed several small pigs in the bushes. The hog laid down and the pigs began nursing. Just my luck  :scared: . It did'nt help that I was in a foot of water and that there were no trees that were climbable. After about a minute (seemed like an hour) she put her head down and began rooting. I snuck out of there with twice as much stealth as did sneaking in. Although I passed on the shot, it was a hunt I'll always remember.

I had a similar thing happen to me while deer hunting. I was in a small opening in thick blueberry brush. I blew my deer call and a Sitka Blacktail doe came crashing into the clearing and stopped broadside at about 10 yds. I was contemplating taking her as I didn't have any meat in the freezer, when I heard something else coming through the brush. Turned out to be her fawn, which ran up to the doe and started nursing. That was a close one! Much safer hunting bucks in the early part of the season!

Only time I've hunted hogs was years ago. Was hunting with my 270 Winchester. About the same thing happened. A nice looking hog can into view then her piglets. Didn't even raise my gun.
