TD Limb mounts???
« on: January 29, 2008, 10:34:00 PM »
Anybody got any observations as to the advantage or disadvantage of back mounted limbs versus belly mounted limbs(such as Black Widow)?

Also, has anyone modified back mounted limbs to fit on the belly side? I got a bow that I need to redesign the riser and I thought I'd check into this option. Thanks

Easterarcher I just finished a longbow with belly mounted limbs and I really like it. I cut the limbs from a 62" to 60" bow because it felt too light. I wanted 50+ and it felt like 45 but when I took to the range and had it weighed it came in at 60# @28 and 58# @ my 27" draw. The bow is more stable may be a bit slower but I haven't shot it through a chrono yet. Heres a sketch of how I mounted the limbs and the riser showing the bolt holes. These limbs were originally made for back mount and I had them on my metal riser before this

WILL THE NORMAL 2 PART EPOXY FROM HARDWARE WORK OR WILL I NEED TO ORDER SOME??

I used smooth-on for mine. I don't know how the 2-part would work. I'd use JB-Weld instead of the 5min and 2hr epoxies it's a lot stronger and should work especially since you don't drill the 1/2" hole all the way through the riser. Only deep enough so that once the threaded insert is screwed in and is bottomed out in the 1/2" hole the bolt head is below the surface a 1/4+". Works best to drill the 5/16" hole first then the 1/2" hole to the right depth after so it will follow the first hole.

I see you are looking into converting a back mounted limb to a belly mount which is what I did with this. To make it work I glued on a strip of phenolic to the side that was going to be the limb to riser surface. Then I sanded it until it was a flat surface. Take your time here so that it is square to the limb otherwise the limb will be tilted to the side. You may not have to do any sanding if the limb surface you will be using is flat enough. If your limbs are like most back mounted limbs the wedge will have a flat surface for 3" or so on the butt end of the limb. But may want to glue some phenolic or additional glass to help strengthen the limb at that point.

Benbow, yes that is what I was considering.....I gotta create a new riser anyway, so I thought I might try it this way.

Thanks for the info...

I have a Blackwidow PSA and I feel the limb mount style allows more room for your coat on your bow arm and in general the bow is very forgiving for me. Something about it allows me to greatly reduce any left/right errors when compared to some of my other bows.

Hi Bill
Do you think this set-up improves the shooting of the bow?
