Your Thoughts On Grohmann Knife #1
« on: November 16, 2011, 05:14:00 AM »
Can anyone tell me about this model?  Been around since 1957.

Anyone own one of these?

Your thoughts, opinions, constructive criticism?

I am considering a purchase, but would like to hear anyone's review of this knife, or any Grohmann for that matter.  Thanks.

It's hard to judge the true size of the handle but I think that handle would cramp my hand from being so narrow. Do you have any arthritis concerns, hand cramp issues? What kind of knives feel the best in your hand?

Hi Ryan, my general comment would be that you made a good choice.  I have the complete collection of Grohmann outdoor / hunting knives and then some.  My favorite model is the #3 Canadian Army with the #1 as a close 2nd. I like the feel of the handle on the 103 slightly better than the #1.  The blade shape on both is excellent and well suited to hunting chores and general duty. Two of their knives that deserve mention are the model #103 short blade skinner and the #100 large skinner, both well suited to the chore their name implies.  The #103 is an excellent skinner.  Like I said I have them all and they have all been put to the test on numerous animals and each really has their speciality.  The #3 had been my go to knife for many years and Dad bought me a #1 as my first true hunting knife about 40 years ago.  I also have a few of them in anniversary and collector versions, upgraded handle material, antler with scrimshaw, etc.

Good choice.
cheers, Dale

They are fantastic knives.  You can also get them as a kit...

Thanks for the replies.

Gables, I have a knife nearly identical to the Original #1, but German made.  I really like the feel and shape of the handle and blade.  It may not be as small of handle as it appears in the picture.

Arrowest, thanks, your firsthand knowledge is a big help.  I'm looking for a good all around knife (to purchase as a gift) for general hunting and skinning use and this looks like a good one, and like I said, nearly identical to the one I already have, but a different maker.

Any thoughts on the regular grind vs. flat grind?

And, high carbon stainless, or carbon steel blade?

Grohmann Knives are the only fixed blade knives I use anymore.  I have used the #1, #3 and #101 extensively.  My favorite is the #101.  Grohmann calls it the Standard Skinner.  However, I have found it to be a superb field knife.  I am also very fond of my #3 Flat Grind.  The #1 is a very nice knife, but the other two fit my hand much better, so I sold the two #1's I had.  Grohmann has #101 seconds for sale on their web-site right now.  As for the flat vs saber grind choice, the flat grind will slice deeply with slightly less drag, but it is not a huge difference in my opinion, so get what you like the look of.  I like the stainless versions, and would recommend stainless for your location.  My #3 also has the Xtra-Wood scales.  They are not quite as attractive as the Rosewood, but very durable.  Another positive aspect of buying a Grohmann Knife is the quality of the people that work there.  I have never dealt with more helpful and friendly folks.

Hi Ryan, Either grind works for me and I have no preferrence either way.  I would suggest the stainless blades though. I will also echo K Harris' comment about the people there, top notch.  I spent 3 hours in their shop while on vacation and was extremely pleased with their service and patience. Walked out of the store with 9 knives that day for friends, family and my collection.
cheers, Dale
