Mother of Pearl
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:35:00 AM »
I have been asked by my kiddo to build her a new pretty bow. She wants Purple. So I am thinking of getting fancy with some mother of pearl tips/accents.
I bring this question to the knife forum as I think you builders use it more than us bow guys.
I am looking for a source for some in a little bit bigger sizes. All I can find are smaller pieces and I am sure this is the nature of the beast.
I am not opposed to using a synthetic if it still looks pretty good. From what I know about the real stuff is that it can be brittle.

Any other ideas for some whitish trim on a purple bow will be cool.
Thanks all.

Try this Chuck. This is not a sponsor so I'm not sure if it will fly, but in this case it might be acceptable.

I'd love to, but I'm recovering from the knife show held over the weekend here in Little Rock. It was a great show, just took a lot out of me. I may be at Tannehill in April for the Batson Symposium though.

Chuck, Knife making article I read while back about working with mother of pearl stated that mother of pearl dust is not something you want to breath, so he advised us wearing a mask while working on it.

OK, Plan B.
I think I want to stay away from the real stuff as it will be to brittle for what I want to do.

I would like to find a strip or strips of some imitation MOP that I could use as overlays and glue up in my riser for an accent strip.
Hey,this is for my daughter,I gotta pull out the stops.

I am thinking around 1.5 - 2" wide and 12" long
Any ideas for me???

Hey Chuck, I think I can help you out. I have some material that I am sure will work, got it from my wife's company to use as inlays in my knife handles.

PM me your address and I will send you something in the mail.
cheers, Dale
