Let me start out by saying The material I am asking about is not for SELL

I am trying to learn how to forge Broad heads and was wondering about Nickel-Copper (aka Monel 400)
I am a machinist and access to a lot of scrap metals of different kinds and would like to make use of them for my personal hunting equipment.

Johnny,
          What application is that material commonly used for in your machining? Is it a bearing? Fitting? etc. OR is it used for a cutting tool?

I am not familar with that exact material, but have used material that "sounds" similar for fittings on knives.

Ive used Monel for guards in the past.  I think it will be way too soft for broadheads.

Nickel-Copper is used in the saltwater area ie: ships it can be used for most anything that needs to be resistant to saltwater corrosion 67% Nickel and 23% copper. Its machining is tough like Hastelloy. It can be used in heat up to 800 deg F

But I did work for a bolt manufacture that made a lot of bolts for Uncle Sam

Nickel (plus Cobalt) ......63.0 min.
Carbon.....................0.3 max.
Manganese .................2.0 max.
Iron.......................2.5 max.
Sulfur ....................0.024 max.
Silicon ...................0.5 max.
Copper ....................28.0 - 34.0

Johnny, I'm not much help here on this one. It might be a good material for a head but I have my doubts. I even more doubts about it's forgability. However I bet it will make some pretty guards and fittings. Even if it could be forged, it would probably be in a narrow range of heat which would be a handicap to someone new to forging. That narrow range is something that you'd have to experiment with. Honestly, I would not expect it to forge well. There are so many good steels that are easy to forge that I would recommend trying them and save the Nickle-copper for the fittings.

it works real well for guards,  used it for a while about 10 years ago when I had some "drops" given to me. Machines and grinds easy.
