Burl Maple and ATS-34
« on: September 25, 2012, 03:09:00 PM »
A friend ordered 6 small hunting knives for a family hunting group. They had to be all the same and have a handle indigenous to Michigan's Upper Peninsula where their camp is.He kept talking Fir and Pine and I kept saying "You're kidding". I asked him if there were no maple trees and he admitted that there were a few.I ordered 8 sets of burl maple and picked the most closely matched set of 6.

Ron,

Those look great and very well matched. Could you give us more details on size, metal, leather, etc.?

Well, the metal was ATS-34 and I sent it out to Paul Bos for heat treating to RC-60. Think they were 5/32 stock and the blades were 3 1/4" long.

Not my normal style of sheath. I usually do a pouch style, but these were a bit easier to fit. Cut them all out at the same time and then adjusted the fit with the snap placement. I like the pouch style better. The blade snaps in and no snap or strap to get cut or wear out.

Definitely decided I don't like batch work   :(
