New knives
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:08:00 PM »
Hello all!  It's been forever since I've been on here, and I've been spending the last two days trying to catch up, to no avail.  There's just too much good work to look at!

Well, here's some pics of some of my more recent work.  It's not nearly as good as most, but I think I'm getting better    :)

Here's a knife I made for a guy at work.  He wanted something different in a bowie.  This is what I came up with.

Here's a few hidden tang knives I made for another gentleman.  He bought the first one for a pastor friend, then his son, then his wife got him one.  I think I'm supplying the whole family!  :D

I do need some help also.  I'm planning on making my soon-to-be brother-in-law a nice knife for a wedding present.  He's a big hunter and doesn't have a hunting knife to take with him.  I really want to make a damascus knife, but I don't forge; just grind from bar stock.  Can anyone give me a name of someone to buy a blade from?  I can't afford a lot, but I do want a nice blade to use.
Joe

I have seen damascus  steel in Jantz Catalog.  They have several patterns and thicknesses to choose from.  Their web site is  www.knifemaking.com

I'm in the same boat as you.  I've wanted to try Damascus for a while, but I only grind from bar stock.  It's hard to find good damascus that isn't expensive, and I haven't talked myself into buying any yet.  Check out Alabama Damascus.  I haven't used them, but have heard about them and browsed their website a couple of times.  They have some nice looking patterns, don't seem to be quite as expensive as some of the higher end billets I have looked at, and it is all American made.  They will also cut out blanks to your specs for you to do the final grinding on.  Just another option.  Having to do less grinding may reduce the chances of you messing up some high dollar steel.  Not saying you would, but I know I still have a fair few screw ups myself.

Beautiful work man!!!!  Look up Zoller Forge plans and you can make a burner from the plans for cheap.  Then find scrap 8 inch or 10 inch pipe and make your own forge!!!!!!  I made one years ago.  Works great!

Nice work, I like the farriers rasp bowie.
Damascus is labour intensive and usually priced accordingly. there are usually some billets for sale on the exchange at bladeforums if you ever frequent that site. Maybe one of the makers on here would make you a low layer count billet to work with for a reasonable price? I'd offer to make one for you, but I am just learning pattern welding and having to forge weld in a friends forge as I don't have one hot enough yet.
