Gotta Friend New toTraditional Archery...Burt Foster

At lot of you may know this guy as a Master Bladesmith with incredible talent & sense of humor.  If you don't know him, google Burt Foster Knives...ya'll are in for some serious eye-candy!  

Burt has talked with me several times this winter about building a selfbow and starting to get his kids and himself into traditional archery.  He even registered here looking for help at my suggestion.  I talked with him yesterday as he is looking to buy a recurve or trade a sharp pointy thing for one.  He really has no idea of what to get, so I'm sending him an old Red Wing Hunter.  At least that will give him something to play with until he figures out what to get.  I'm sure if he wants to trade one of his knives, he'll have a lot of nice bows to choose from!

Now what we need to do is welcome him here.  His Trad Gang handle is Burt Foster and lives in Bristol, VA for anyone who might live near him.  If ya'll twist his arm, maybe we can get him to join in on some shop talk...tippit

I've seen the knives on his web site and I think if he would join the forum, he could definitely make for some interesting reading. Seems to have quite a sense of humor and his leather work is just as interesting and artistic as his knives.

I don't have much to offer myself, but I sure benefit from every tip I pick up here. I think Burt could offer quite a few.

If Burt starts showing his work, you're gonna see some of the very best in the world. His work has been an inspiration to me. Burt is also a great teacher and family man. I'm glad to see him here.

I am glad to hear that Burt is hanging around the gang. I do hope to hear from him here in our little corner of TG.  I have viewed his work through pictures often and am glad to hear he is a part of our trad community.

Good to be here.  I started shooting a bow when I was quite small, but I got a bow with wheels as soon as mom and dad would buy me one.  11 years ago, I was in Arkansas taking the ABS Intro to Bladesmithing class under Mastersmith Jay Hendrickson when he showed us this long, curvy stick he called a bow.  I told him about the ones with wheels, and he didn't seem to care.

I have now officially crossed that magical line in the sand that divides the first half of my life from the second, and all of a sudden, the curvy wood sticks look more like bows to me than they did to my younger eyes.  I started off with one of those little red fiberglass Bear recurves (remember those?) and maybe with your guys help I can finish off the same way.

Burt, I am so glad to hear that your jumping into the dark side of archery.  I did the compound thing myself but the "feeling" wasn't there.  There is no better feeling for me than to take a deer with a bent stick and process it with knives I made.

I will help anyway I can, even though there are guys much better than I am in PowWow.  If you find yourself back in the Little Rock area let me or Lin know.  There is a archery shop that has hundreds of trad bows and they will let you shoot all of them.

Welcome Burt.  Glad to have you. I require a lot of advice, so the more people on here giving it the better.  By the way, if someone is sending you an "old Red Wing Hunter" the search is over.  That is one of the best bows ever made and is currently all I hunt with.  Can't wait for you to start posting some of your work.

We're a pretty easy crowd, and even though we focus on knives in this sub-forum, we all have stick bows in our blood as well.
You could consider it either a double-addiction, or the best of both worlds.

This is a cool place to be,not any arguing mostly just good guys telling each other good job. and getting good advice.    

This knife making started for me right here,after trading bows in one of the other sub forums.At last count it was several thosand  dollars invested and countless knives made.
Kinda like you one thing leads to another and hopefully it won't cost you like it did me,especially if you need Black Widow's LOL
