"Anvil" finish Bowie for TG'er
« on: August 18, 2013, 09:55:00 AM »
Finished up an "Anvil" finish Bowie for a fellow Tradganger.  Only grinding done was to roll in convex edge.  Blade is 1095FG (3/8" stock),  blade length is 10" x 1-7/8", handle is a tad over 5".  Wood is Katalox, I really like this stuff,  never seen/used a tougher wood.

A few quick cell phone pics, handle still needs a bit more waxing-

thanks Dana,  I got the wood years ago from Cook Woods.  They usually have a few pieces, and all that Ive received from them is well dried etc....  I really like it.  Not as pretty as some, but hell for tough.

Very nice Matt. Your posts are always a pleasure to open. Some may not see it for the beauty it is but those should just try once to forge one to shape and get it right. Your forge work is spot on. Thanks for sharing.

I love everything about that knife.  Excellent work.  That baby screams to be used!

thanks Steve... I used to do a bunch of forge/anvil finish knives,  going to start some more.  Can sell them for a very reasonable price as there is no time in hand sanding, polishing hamons etc......

was laid up this week with a lung infection, WEAR YOUR RESPIRATORS!  Have had the sheath laid out for a while, just have to get it together.  Its going on a  shoulder set up, trying to work out the "reach" issue with mounting such a large knife to a shoulder rig.  Think I will end up having to make it a "split" welt so the blade can be canted when drawn.

Just catching this...

Yes that screams "use me!".  This bowie will be traveling to Alaska and finding itself a suitable home for years to come.

I actually commissioned Matt to retrofit a sheath that would work on one of the shoulder harnesses Ron Laclair sells.  If the geometry works out for my torso it should be an extremely handy way for carrying this knife.

Looks great and thanks Matt!  Get well soon brother, been great talking with you.
