420 SS/Damascus San Mai
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:16:00 PM »
Don't ever ask me to get something done in a hurry - OK?
It was either 4 years ago or 5 - I'm just not sure.
Brian Thie and I were watching Bill Wiggins and Daniel Warren do a San Mai demo at the Mid-America ABS hammer-in.
I looked at Brian and he looked at me and we simultaneously said, "Wonder what that would look like with Damascus?"
So - all this time later, I finally get around to doing one.
It's a really over-cast and cloudy day here, today, but normally a bit of sun would showcase the really nice chatoyance this Damascus has.
I am going to hot-blue it, like I do with all my Damascus, and it will show up even better then.
But, I just got this etched and thought I'd toss it out here for folks to see.

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

That's fine as frog hair Karl!

Karl, that is very cool I love it!

I enjoy seeing what you create and from time to time enjoy looking at your web site.  However you do not have your site published here!  Do you still have a web site?

Thanks, gentlemen.
To tell you the truth - I had no idea how it was going to turn out.
The case is not yet closed on this knife, however.
It will still go through some changes and I have yet to hot-blue one of these!
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Thanks. But I'll be honest - it's not so much the "effect" I'm after as much as it is succeeding at the challenge of welding stainless steel to tool steel.
They really would rather not be together.
And the process of pulling it off is a one-shot deal.
You either nail the weld - or fail.
I'd rather get the weld, draw it out and see a little bit of what it's like, and then move on and do another one!!

"As you once told me" Challenges like this is what makes us better knife makers.
