I read on another site that coil springs are 1095 and leaf springs are 5160 steel.then in a book by a famous knife maker he stated both are 5160 .can anybody clear this up .
life is too short,enjoy it !!!

5160 is designed to be coil or leaf spring steel, but I am sure that other spring steels were and are used for some of the same applications. So, without analyzing it, it could be one of several steels.
