Two Questions
« on: September 29, 2013, 04:01:00 PM »
I was putting up a tree stand today and found a wild cherry burl that was 28" in diameter and dang near perfectly spherical. Would this make good scales and if so what is best time of year to harvest?

Thanks

I would probably wait until winter when most of the sap is in the ground.
Just less "stuff" to dry out.
It could have a lot of potential.
Slab it into thick slabs and lay in a stack with slats between to allow air to dry it out.
I would want it a good 2inches+ thick.
Then, wait a year or more before having it stabilized.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

What Karl said.  I have built a couple of knives out of black cherry burl and it makes great looking handles.
