Vertical Forge
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:05:00 PM »
Hi there, I'm looking to improve my way of forging, currently I use a waste incinerator unit burning MDF waste, it easily gets up to temperature (will bring a 3/8 knife to cherry red in a minute or so) but its not very controlled.

I was looking to build a forced air vertical forge, I've read back to '09 on these boards to help my design/knifework but was looking for a bit of information.

Currently my idea is to cut the lid off of an old propane tank (filled with watery for safety), line with fire bricks and glaze with ceramic cement.

Drill for a burner near the base to the rear of the entrance.

My question is, inside the forge, is there a floor plate to distribute the heat/rest the material on, and is the inside blocked in to a smaller size to contain the heat?

I'd greatly appreciate a couple of pics if one of you wouldn't mind as I'm a fabricator, designs make more sense than words haha  javascript:void(0)  :knothead:

Many thanks, Kieran
