Camp Brute
« on: May 11, 2014, 06:53:00 PM »
I forged this Camp knife yesterday and got started making a little progress on it today. It's in the oven for the final session of drawing the hardness back now. I started with 1/4 X 1 1/2 inch 5160 steel. I forged it entirely by hand and put a taper on the tang. Blade is 9 inches.

Pretty cool Lin! What do you have in mind for the scales? For some reason, the first thing I thought of was sheep horn on it.
Can't wait to see it finished up, whatever you choose.

Your forging skills are amazing - all of you that forge that close to finish are just awesome.  I grind a lot more steel than you  :)

Are you wearing Muck boots in the shop?  How do they hold up to hot steel and slag drops?

Thanks guys.

Bobby, I wear these because they are about worn out. I can slip em on easy. I just stay off of anything hot what ever shoes I am wearing and wear old stuff.

I put the handle on yesterday late and it still has some compound on the sheep. I'm not used to these brutes yet and will have to learn to blend the forging to the finishing.

Beautiful knife! The sheep's horn compliments both the forge finish and the smooth blade very well!
