My skinning knife this year...

This took me quite a long time.  I knapped the blade, carved the bone and amber, poured the pewter, filled the cavity with cutler's resin and wrapped the pommel with silk.  In other words, I made it myself.  It's not up to the standards of you guys, but for a guy with two crippled hands I'm content with myself.

 

 

 

Something I couldn't get was the fact that there is a pine needle stuck in the amber.  It's remarkably tough to photograph.

Anyone know how to make a workable sheath for this to go with my quiver?  I have leather and I do passable work, just afraid to snap my blade.  It's the only one I ever made, and knapping is really hard on my hands.

It seems to me there is a big misconseption on this site that if you are "lesser" you can/should not post here. I think that is BS and I wish more would post thier work. Most knife posts here do not get a lot of verbal trafic but rest assured many people look and admire.

Yup-that looks great from where I'm sitting. Very cool that you worked all of those materials-I'm envious of your talent. As for a sheath, maybe a fairly deep pouch style sheath? If you make it only snug instead of more tight like a more modern knife, maybe it would be less likely to break the blade at some point. And if you make it deep enough, it should have more of a chance of staying put. Thanks for sharing.

I really like it.  Take a pic of it on a black background and make that blade pop!!!  Very unique, bet you could skin a mosquito with that blade.

You shouldn't belittle your work. That knife is a work of art and it looks plenty capable of skinning a deer and look good doing it.

Halfseminole, I agree that it is a wonderful piece of art that contains a piece of your soul, and should not be looked at as any less than anyone else's. Very well done, sir.

Sorry I can't be much help with the sheath. Though I would suggest thinking about maybe using a hollowed out chunk of wood, wrapped in leather.     Maybe if the wood were long enough to go up the handle about a third of the way, it would help keep the blade safe....Just a thought.

I agree with the wood.  I saw a number of wooden sheaths in the Scandinavian countries and they looked great.  Maybe pick a nice chunk of a branch or root and hand carve or burn via placed embers and then scrape a cavity that holds the blade safely but the contact is around the front of the handle, not the blade ?

I agree with the idea of a fitted wood sheath wrapped in leather. You might consider a wooden trough shaped "boat" with a leather flap cover (that fastens) that could be worn horizontal on the belt or from the neck resting on the chest.

Well, it looks like a knife, and it carries like a knife, but it don't cut.  After all the work, the blade I knapped is only good to look at.  I'll be matching the handle with a new blade in the future, but my wife got me an obsidian axe blade for my birthday tomorrow so I'll be back with that soon.  It'll be easier for me to take a blade of that format into the woods.
