Definitions?... What knife is what?...
« on: January 18, 2016, 03:12:00 PM »
I'm just a stock removal guy with aspirations to become a forge guy one of these days but I'm very confused on your definitions of your knives...

I know the easy stuff like hidden tang and full tang but I've seen alot of "Bowie" knives that were label as such but look absolutely no different than anothers camp knife...

What constitutes the difference between a Bowie, chopper, camp knife, brute, brute hunter etc..

Pictures would help.

Thank you all for your help.

You may get a few opinions based on what each person's idea of the word.

A Bowie is a large knife, usually with a clip and a cross guard.

If a knife chops it's a chopper no matter the rest.

A brute knife has a forged finish of some sort.

I have made a Brute Bowie that is a real chopper. How's that for mixed up?

Whew!!! I'm glad the real definitions are as confusing as my definitions! I thought it was just me...

Thanks for your time, Lin.

Todd, the "Bowie" question continues.....

And a good ? it is!

Lin's idea is the valid one!  I have also seen large Spear Point Knives called Bowie's too!

If you make the knife, call it what ya want.

Have you used it while you're hunting?

No Karl. That would make it a Brute Bowie Hunter...Chopper. That's too much for my brain.

Lin,

What got me wondering is I was looking at your web site and noticed you won the 2015 best "camp knife" award. I was just wondering what sets it apart from a Bowie or can you enter your Bowie knives in the camp knife class.

Thanks again,

Todd

My idea of a Camp Knife is a large knife but is designed for chopping chores around camp. So there is little need for a sharpened clip and you might not want the double guard. A heavy blade spine would help with the chopping. Also, a sculpted handle with small texture as opposed to deep checkering or popcorn stag.

This is just one guys' idea of a Camp Knife.
