Funny I stumbled on to this thread. Don't mean to hijack with my story, but had to share. I had one of those pinehogs try to climb into my lap this fall while out in western ND. I perched myself on a dirt mound next to a big cottonwood for the evening hunt. I had some deer coming in from my left when I caught movement on my right. Low and behold here comes Mr. Quills through the scrub brush and he had his mind set that he was going to make his way up that dirt mound and then up the tree for the evening. I didn't want to scare off the deer nor have him use me as a stepping stool so I slowly picked up a stick that was by leg that had a small fork at the end. He stopped briefly to smell my boot then kept coming, I took that stick and placed the forked end on his forehead and pushed back, he only backed up to move around the obstical that he had ran into. We went back and forth, left and right for about 5 times before he turned and sat down facing the same direction I was and let out a small sigh. I believe he was quite puzzled on why he couldn't get past this branch. When he sat down, I could have reached out and petted him he was so close. I then placed the stick against his side and pushed to get him to move on. That is when he displayed his arsenal, quite impressive I might add. I had to poke him 3 times before he finally had enough and moved on. I don't think he will be bothering that tree any time soon. Sorry, just had to share.
