Here is the start of my attempt at

making a Hickory Holmegaard.  I picked up the stave today, and read and re-read the holmegaard build along and watched Bernie go through the process.  Per the build a long that I followed, I made the working limbs a little wider than that for an osage with the total width being 2.25 inches.  I am also trying to get between the 45-50 lbs range at 26 inch draw.  The overall lengt will be 66" with a 4' handle, 2" fade from the handle to the working outter limb and 2" fade to the 1' outter non working limb.  I will post pictures of my progress as I contnue.

Dano, the stave is just great.  Has a little bit of propeller twist, but not much.  The wood was cut 2 years ago and has been in  a basement since. Keep your eye on me like you did with Bernie.....I can sure use the help

That is a nice piece of hickory. One thing I would do is leave the handle area as wide as the limbs and also thick. That way you will have a place to clamp your bow while working on it. You don't need a handle until you are ready to shoot anyway. You might even be able to reduce some of the width but you can decide that later. Its gonna be fun. Enjoy the ride.     Pat

Good scoop from Pat there (He most always has good scoop - although I recall a story about some advice he offered on a farmer's daughter - who turned out to be that county's first lady Sherriff also ........... but that's better saved for a different time and campfire       ).

Hope you enjoy your excursion with the Holmi as much as I have mine. I took "Hannah" (mine) out last night at about 10:15 PM for some more full draw shooting - by flashlight. Man that Holmi hammers, even at it's light weight. At 10 yads it sunk six arrows in the middle of the target within an inch of small spots I picked - halfway up the 28" Cane shafts. Well, one arrow was three inches off - must have been that "skeeter" - LOL

As pointed out, I sure did miss read the layout.  The taper from the working limb to the non working outter limb will be changed.  I will taper it from 2.25 to 1 1/8 and the taper the outter limb to 1/2 at the tips.  Like Bernie said is his posting, "Where was that when I read it for the 18th time"?  Any way...will make the cange before cutting any wood down and then start the process.  Hey Bernie?  You want to work up those arms some more to handle Hanna better?  I will send it to you.....lol......

Gee thanks, your all heart, Charlie        . Think I'll pass though. I might just do one out of Elm (the original wood for them, they say) one day but for now gonna work my BBI and then some Osage (I love Osage) if all goes well.

That ok Bernie.  I am sure by the time I get the draw knife out and get started, you would not be able to pry it out of my hands......literally....just going to take it slow and easy.  I am sure what ever you do my friend, it will turn out great...as always

Well got a day off, and other than a few leaking windows to caulk, got to cut some on the stave.  Don't have a bandsaw so got the hand held planner out and went to work.  (don't worry, stayed way away from the lines)  So far the stave looks really good with only on concern area, but will look closer at that when I start the wood removal.  Hopefully will get some pics later of the progress
