Found Large Osage Tree Today
« on: September 13, 2008, 03:04:00 PM »
I found a large osage tree today while hunting that can be cut down. Is southern osage from georgia any good for bow making?

If you don't want it I will take it off your hands.
Yes, it should be just fine for bows. Probably not the ideal climate for osage but there is no such thing as bad osage. Some is just better than others.
Be sure the tree doesn't have a spiral growth to the trunk. If it does, so will your staves.      Pat

the really wide ones are usually hollow like and old oak.  BUT osage is always good, even twisted ones will make laminated bows bows, and they like to spliced at the handle so all you really need is 3' good

Wow Steve! Is that a creek bottom tree? Looks like it had to fight for sun.

Dennis - Straight trees with stright bark are good. You won't know about the rings unless you plug it or cut it though. That said, I've seen good bows come from supposed bad trees.

I'd say you might I said you might.Get a stave or two out of it.
Yes I'd say there are so manny staves in it you'll be making bows for a many seasons to come. You need to make some friends to do all that spliting. If I did'nt live so far away I'd become your friend.
Bigger the tree the less cround your staves will have. This makes tillering is easer.Which means better cast and faster bows.
