Mullberry for lams?
« on: November 26, 2008, 12:58:00 PM »
Anyone ever used or heard of using mullberry for lams in making glass bows?  I've got a pretty nice 16 inch log down right now, it's pretty straight to about 8 feet.  I know it'd make decent staves, but I've got way too much good osage around here for that.  I was thinking about cutting it up into boards and making lams out of it.

Any experience with this?

I sawed up a big mulberry log last winter and made slats out of it. Quarter saw it and  put Bamboo on it and it makes one heck of a bow. Some of the guys on Trad Gang got some of it off of me. Maybe they will chime in and tell how it worked out.I would be interested in a stave if you split it. Can't tell you much about Mulberry and glass. Dean

I bought some from Dean and made a very nice boo backed bow.  Easy to work with.  Cannot locate the pics of the bow I made but I have another stave I am going to make up come January.  I will post pics.
I would say as with most woods under glass it would be good.  The performance from the bow I made, I would use it as a lamination.

Thanks guys.

Dean, you are welcome to some of it if I split it.

No reason it wouldn't work under glass, if you like the look and the feel.

Jerry, give Chuck a call.  I think he has used mulberry for lams in the past.

Thanks Rick.  I should have guessed that.
