matte finish question........
« on: December 30, 2008, 08:35:00 PM »
I recently picked up a relatively new MOAB that has quite a few scuffs in the finish and a scratch on the upper limb (belly side). I am thinking of refinishing it myself and am looking for some info on applying a matte, non-reflective finish. Is this something that can be accomplished without spray equipment? I would really prefer to have bow redone professionally, but funds are a little tight right now. If any of you have any input I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Mike

Mike,

I usually do a satin finish.  I use the Polyurethane spray cans you find at wallyworld.  It has the spray nozzle that fans out, just like a real spray gun, and it mists real nice, so you get a real smooth finish.  Just make sure you don't get the waterbased stuff.  It's basically crap IMO.

You can also just use any finish, gloss or otherwise, and use a #0000 or #000 steel wool to buff it down to a satin finish.

You can also apply the last coat from further away.  You can move away until the finish looks to be frosting.  Works really well for me.
